I believe that life’s worst experiences have the power to shape us in profound ways. My mother once said, “Whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” There’s a lot of truth in this saying, and my own journey confirms its validity.
The phrase, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” might be an exaggeration, but it rings true for many of us. Over several years, I experienced what I consider the biggest tragedy in my life. Despite the severity, I chose not to be broken by it but to become stronger.
Adversity: A Turning Point in Life
Several years ago, my girlfriend and I both fell seriously ill. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and I was required to undergo major surgery. Despite the medical setbacks, my near-death experience became a catalyst for personal growth. I had no choice but to become stronger.
Today, at 66, I am in athletic condition. My VO2 max and resting heart rate (RHR) are 53, placing me in the highest category, and I can complete ultramarathons. This journey has taught me that adversities can break you or make you stronger, depending on the choices you make.
